The purpose of my work is to complicate the simplistic, exploit comparisons, and connect to past, present, and alternate realities. Performance activated sculptures are created in an attempt to engage with the viewer, and I let my subject matter dictate the medium and delivery. Having a past in construction, experience in painting and a BA in printmaking, I use the appropriate tools to execute the action.
The main concern of my work is to explore identity and cultural evolution; how was it before, how has it changed, how is it similar or different? I emphasise these factors in order to provoke a dialog, typically around societal issues that affect Irish people.
Being born in New York and growing up in Ireland, I always felt like I had a foot in both worlds, giving me a unique perspective on what it really means to be Irish. In a globalised world, what are the identities which still resonate?
