HAIR HISTORIES
Ask any woman and she will tell you. Her relationship with her hair is like a love affair. My project explores the relationship between cultural identity and hair through the lens of POC women living in Ireland; investigating early childhood experiences through illustration and textiles.
As a member of the Black community, I admit that we often take the significance of hair to another level. This is due to it being traced back to our African ancestors. ‘Locs of Love’ is an interactive softbook showcasing the personal experiences of the POC community, informed by first-hand interviews with women in Ireland that examine how their relationship with their hair has evolved.
My illustrated book, ‘My Puffy Fluffy Power’ sheds light on what the majority of POC have experienced with their hair during their upbringing in Ireland. The purpose of this project is to empower the young Black community through this project.
My Puffy Fluffy Power is a collaborative illustrated book, between myself and author Shauna Harris. It is a story sharing the universal struggles both black boys and girls face when it comes to the relationship they face when it comes to their hair.
