My current work primarily revolves around the exploration of my childhood, memories, and sense of belonging. Using mixed media, I express these themes through a variety of methods, incorporating elements of print, ink, and charcoal. I find that experimenting and playing with diverse materials and techniques results in a wide range of unique prints and drawings.
I was born in a small village in Laois and moved when I was twelve. After living in various homes, I settled back near the same village with my own family. Being uprooted so often made me feel as though I never truly belonged anywhere; this experience has profoundly shaped who I am today. In this body of work, I explore the woods where I played and walked as a child. These woods feel like home, and I still love to walk and explore them, often with my children who like to play in the same place I did as a child. While I am immersed in the woods, I create new memories and revisit old ones.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Kiki Smith, Louise Bourgeois, Peter Doig, and Mamma Anderson, my pieces often evoke a sense of nostalgia and the concept of “home,” while delving into themes of family and nature. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on their own connections to places and the significant role these connections play in shaping our identities. My artwork is a free expression and a tribute to the woods and nature that have moulded me into the artist I am today.
I selected my final pieces because I feel they best convey the emotions I strive to communicate within my art. These pieces complement each other and showcase the various materials and processes I have employed. Looking ahead, I plan to use this work as a starting point to delve deeper into the themes I am exploring.
