Tragedies and Shipwrecks
The central focus of my practice is on the ocean, Arctic landscapes and historical polar exploration. This is inspired by a fascination with the Franklin expedition. The unsettling atmosphere present in my paintings is created by the painting of a bright orange background. The portrayal of unease throughout the work is informed by study of film and television programmes featuring the theme of cannibalism, an example being the film ‘Hannibal’. Themes of cannibalism in art can be used to represent many things including colonisation, abuse, or love. Regardless of the theme, my work often represents feelings of isolation, a sense of unease and impending tragedy.
