Bringing the Colour Back
Hospital admissions can be scary and saddening for children and adults alike. As children we are sheltered from the harsh reality of health issues through bright colours, toys and distractions in children’s hospitals. We then as adults are moved to a dull, colourless and cold atmosphere. For adults who are constantly admitted to hospital through chronic illness, this consistently unpleasant atmosphere can take a toll on their mental health.
As a young woman with Cystic Fibrosis, my target audience was other young women with chronic illnesses who are hospitalised regularly. My first body of work is an illustrated colourful magazine filled with inspiring words aimed to lift the moods of the patient. I designed sleeping masks aimed to help with broken sleep experienced by many women in such places. My final outcome is a set of three acrylic and mixed media paintings highlighting some other common issues that young women feel affects them when hospitalised.
I designed a magazine targeted towards young women with frequent hospital stays. This magazine contains a mix of advice, reassurance, humour, hacks and activities. I made it very bright ,colourful and playful as a means to bring the colour back into hospital stays. This magazine will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis wards across Ireland.
The magazine contains a free sticker sheet. The stickers are included to give a nostalgic feeling as with childhood magazines there are always small treats added. Such as stickers and badges. These stickers are anatomy themed with some hidden references to Cystic Fibrosis.

I designed sleeping masks as an outcome to solve a massive problem that majority suffer with in the hospital. I designed these colourful sleeping masks to aid ones sleep in the hospital. Blocking out any lights that come in to the room. As well as looking gorgeous!
My lovely sister testing the product. She approves.
'Suffocated by scripts' Acrylic on A2 canvas. The aim of this painting is to show how overwhelming having such a large medical routine can be. You are constantly asked questions, worried about side effects, confused when to take them and then the routine can often be changed around when admitted to hospital. It is quite overwhelming and many young women have exclaimed how overwhelming it can be.
