Butterfly Mind
Working with the riskiness and uncontrollability of watercolour, where colours wash over and seep into each other with varying intensities, unexpectedly marking, raising, and rippling surfaces, suggested an abundance of possible relational encounters and boundaries. The fluidity of the medium made it an emotionally expressive tool to explore loss. Water, akin to amniotic fluid, links us to and separates us from our mothers. Its qualities of receptivity and resistance make it a compelling medium to explore intergenerational relationships.
The paintings and film inform each other, with the final paintings seeking to explore some of the visual qualities of the film. This approach allowed me to create a multifaceted immersive sensory and synesthetic experience, with text, image, and momentum exploring discord and integration.
This process enabled me to navigate the health and other tolls that neuronorms take on neurominorities. The project consists of mid- to large-scale watercolour paintings and a film that explore loss and intergenerational neurodivergence from non-pathologising perspectives.
