The ties that stitch our family together
“A grandad job is the best job I have ever had, guiding my grandchildren in the right direction with tales and stories along the way” - Gonga
We’ve always been quite close, my grandad ‘Gonga’ and I. He’s more than simply a family member, he’s a wellspring of power, knowledge, and enduring tales. His life experiences are depicted in the wrinkles on his face and the rhythm of his speech, which show tenacity and resilience. My grandfather’s life is like a thread with shades of love and nostalgia, from stories of his early years to his expedition through adversity and victory.
The focus of this project is to honour the beauty of ‘Gonga’s’ life and the significant influence he has had on mine. Through embroidery, drawing and the camera lens, the project captures his spirit and preserves his legacy. The tie that ‘Gonga’ wears every single day is manipulated as well using embroidery and quilting. The log cabin quilting technique in particular reminds me of home, our family and our community.
