Horrors of Girlhood
This body of work delves into the surreal and fantastical realms, inspired by surrealist films, horror stories, classic fairytales, and the tumultuous journey of girlhood. This project captures the duality of teenage years, highlighting the profound transformation as a girl blossoms into womanhood, viewing the ever-changing world through a fresh lens.
The narrative explores both the horrors and wonders of growing up female. It reflects on how we romanticise the gritty and undesirable elements of girlhood, possibly as a coping mechanism or a reflection of societal expectations. Like Ophelia in Shakespeare’s "Hamlet", even suffering is depicted with a haunting beauty. My scenes are meticulously crafted with floral aesthetics and intricate symbolism, reflecting the age-old rituals of femininity.
Through vivid imagery and hidden meanings, I examine the timeless rituals, such as the brushing of long hair, and their historical implications of femininity, sensuality, and defiance. This work is a tribute to the complex beauty and resilience inherent in the female experience.
