NCAD WORKS 2024 provides a portal to the full breadth of work by our extraordinary graduates from across our four schools of Fine Art, Design, Education, and Visual Culture and encompasses students graduating from our broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and CEAD programmes.

Collectively, our graduates represent Ireland’s creative future, and they each hold great potential to play a dynamic and impactful role in the Ireland we face right now. As you will see from this work, our students want to fuel change in a creative and productive way, from how we design our public services to the way we see each other.

They are emerging into their professional careers at an exciting time as new opportunities emerge in Ireland for creative graduates. The creative sector is one of the fastest growing in the global economy. Ireland’s creative graduates drive our creative and cultural sectors, which currently contribute 3.7% of Gross Added Value to the economy, with room to grow even more.

Our students are fully engaged with the world beyond the NCAD campus, and they continue to demonstrate their ambition and commitment to make work that has impact and meaning to us all in many different ways. The big challenges that face society can be traced across our graduates' work as they apply their creativity to bringing new solutions, critical thinking, and reflection onto issues including sustainability, gender identity and equality, wellbeing, new technologies, and our digital and material futures.

An education at NCAD is the starting point for generations of bold and curious minds that have made an enormous contribution to society in many different ways. We are confident that this generation is set to continue this extraordinary legacy as they leave us equipped with the imagination, creativity, and critical thinking that will ensure that they make an impact in whatever path they follow.

So, on behalf of An Bord and all my colleagues at NCAD – congratulations to all our graduating students; we are extremely proud of all that you have achieved, and we look forward to following your creative journeys in the future.

Empathising with the Enemy

Interviews with Palestinian and Israeli activists working towards ending the occupation and achieving peace and equal rights for everyone in the region, i.e. all of the land from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean sea.

Interviewees: Noor A’Wad, Tom Mehager, Naser Odat, Mohamad Jamous, Ofer Shorr, Rana Salman, Danielle Cantor, Rav Hanan Schlesinger and Or.

The work involves a combination of modern storytelling processes with traditional media such as analog photography, darkroom activity and letterpress printing. This work may not change the world, but it might bring information to light that could be deemed important, interesting, useful or enlightening.

Or is a conscientious objector, activist, and therapist. She fights for anti-occupation work, animal rights, climate action, gender equality, and LGBTQI+ issues. She is an Arab-Jew from Jerusalem.

Rana Salman is a Palestinian activist from Beit Jala. She is the Executive Director of Combatants For Peace, an Israeli-Palestinian NGO committed to non-violent resistance against the occupation.

Noor A’wad is a Palestinian activist and geopolitical tour guide from Bethlehem. He is involved with Roots/Shorashim/Judur, an Israeli-Palestinian grassroots initiative for understanding, non-violence, and transformation, among other non-violent initiatives and activist groups.

Mohamad Jamous is a Palestinian activist and peacemaker from Jericho. He coordinates various youth programs and interfaith events to build the movement for peace and solidarity in the Holy Land.

Danielle Cantor is the co-founder of Culture of Solidarity and the House of Solidarity. The former is a mutual aid movement that works with communities in Israel-Palestine to dismantle the roots of oppression and injustice. The latter is a radical left-wing activist community centre based in Tel Aviv.

Ofer Shorr is a conscientious objector, activist, teacher, and translator from Jerusalem. During the Second Intifada, he signed the ‘Courage to Refuse’ letter. Since then, he has engaged in solidarity activism with Palestinians in the West Bank and has continued to refuse military service. He lives and teaches in Haifa.

Tom Mehager is a Mizrahi Jewish Israeli activist and writer from Tel Aviv. He works with Zochrot, an organisation dedicated to educating Jewish Israelis about the ongoing Nakba.

Naser Odat is a Palestinian filmmaker, singer, and activist leading the Standing Together movement in Haifa. Standing Together is a grassroots Jewish-Arab movement fighting for peace, equality, and social justice in Israel-Palestine.

Rav Hanan Schlesinger is an Israeli rabbi settler and activist who lives in the West Bank. Following a personal journey of spiritual transformation, he now collaborates with and advocates for his Palestinian neighbours.
