I Trust You With Your Own Eyes
Heather Hughes is an Irish interdisciplinary artist, whose research focuses on an increasingly digitised society and its effects on interpersonal relationships. Her work primarily explores the use of technology interfaces as a communication tool – examining how they shape our interactions with others and ourselves. Hughes addresses the disembodiment that occurs between the immaterial space of digital interaction and the material reality, striving to reconcile these realms.
‘I Trust You With Your Own Eyes’ examines the relationship between an image and its consumer, disrupting the traditional barrier with a range of interactive technologies that challenges the illusion of physical anonymity typically afforded to the voyeur. By embodying a range of archetypal characters, Hughes transforms herself into a consumable image. Viewers are invited to observe and project their interpretations onto her, while the setup prevents mental disconnection from how they choose to interact with the work.
