VOICE
We all know the feeling of having a lump in our throat.
When we are feeling anxious, our voice betrays the state of our mental health and is a prominent marker of our individual identity.
‘VOICE’ is a multimedia installation that draws attention to how essential it is for our sense of identity and mental health to be heard in this world. From the point of view of having spent half of my life in one language and then another, VOICE charts autobiographical experiences of physical and mental injury, such as being othered, ghosted, not speaking up, or not being able to speak.
Sound recordings of the word “whisper” are translated into lathe-turned forms that are then slip-cast in clay, assembled with hand-thrown ceramic forms, and altered.
In focussing on the experience of damage and loss, VOICE reflects on the fragility of our identity.
