Reimagining Dublin: Enhancing Women’s Urban Experiences Through Interaction Design
The urban environment shapes the daily lives of millions, yet cities often fail to reflect the diverse needs of women and gender-diverse individuals. As Leslie Kern highlights in 'Feminist City' (2021), urban landscapes are predominantly designed from a male-centric perspective, marginalising women in city making. This oversight extends beyond safety concerns to include the redefinition of spaces for joy and leisure, ensuring that women can not only navigate but also enjoy the city.
Research reveals that cities do not align with female travel patterns, public spaces lack consideration for women’s safety and comfort, and women do not experience the city as freely as men do. This project aims to address these issues by recognising the significant role of urban and digital environments in shaping experiences. It explores how the design of interactive experiences, digital platforms, and online services can create inclusive, enjoyable, and safe cities that enhance women’s experiences and agency.
