Safe/Not Safe
Through my practice, I find myself animated by images of ambiguity and unease, of precarious situations with enigmatic outcomes. The light/dark cognitive dissonance of our contemporary experience; knowing and not knowing, seeing and not seeing are often experienced simultaneously.
The images and ideas that surface prominently for me are those of fragility and hubris; the temporariness of it all, the timeless nonsense of humanity. Through the collection and examination of images and materials from mass media and advertising, I employ the process of drawing, deconstruction and juxtaposition, until a narrative emerges. The uncertainty and unpredictability of this process excites me. Using charcoal, ink and soft pencil I attempt to render the observable world.
This body of work can be seen as an analysis of the contemporary midden, a rooting in the trash; artefacts and images, producing images of uncertainty and disquietude.
