Darwin O’Sullivan
he/him
Dios de la Explotación
Darwin’s background as a chef and an artist allows him to create large-scale 3D sculptures relating to the food industry. Combining materials such as wood, clay, and aluminium foil, this large-scale sculptural work represents the global exportation of chocolate to local shops as a low-value commodity. The juxtaposition of materials presents a contrast between natural resources, highlighting the journey and transformation of chocolate from its raw ingredients to a widely traded commodity, referencing the damage perpetrated in the process.
From the forced labour in cocoa plantations during colonial times to modern-day instances of labour exploitation in the chocolate industry, the pursuit of resources like cocoa by colonists has led to the displacement of indigenous communities from their ancestral lands, further exacerbating the injustices brought by colonialism. The history of slavery is deeply intertwined together with the displacement of countless communities and the exploitation of resources such as cocoa.
