Lights Out
Formula One, renowned for its speed and spectacle, represents the pinnacle of motorsport. 'Lights Out' delves into the sport's multifaceted nature, using Jean Baudrillard’s fatal strategies and Paul Virilio’s concepts of dromology and accidentology as theoretical frameworks. These theories help illuminate the dynamics of competition, technology, and risk within the sport.
Despite stringent safety regulations, accidents continue to occur, demonstrating the complex interplay between human error and mechanical failures. This aspect is explored in ‘Integral Accident,’ a series of paintings that map specific accidents in Formula One, examining what went wrong in each case.
Baudrillard’s fatal strategies, which challenge conventional rationality, resonate with Formula One’s strategic manoeuvring in competition and branding. This complexity is further explored in ‘Tobacco Tactics,’ which examines the sport’s aggressive branding strategies.
‘Dromos’ is a high-contrast, elongated typeface that reflects the engineered speed of the sport. Through ‘Dromos,’ these theories converge, capturing Formula One’s intricate blend of competition, technology, and commercialism.
In conclusion, this exploration not only sheds light on Formula One’s broader significance in contemporary society but also unveils its intricate dynamics and cultural impact.
