Primitive Pottery
My illustration project centres around a "Primitive Pottery Workshop" that I organised. Interested in the division between modern human culture and the natural world, I aimed to bridge this gap through experimental archaeology. This involved harvesting wild clay, building Irish Bronze Age-style pots, and firing them in a DIY pit fire. The design outcomes included a branding and advertising campaign, as well as a manual for workshop participants to take home.
Process, craft, and materiality were as important in the creation of the promotional materials and manuals as they were in the pottery making itself. All my illustrations were initially produced using analogue techniques, such as linocut printing for posters and leaflets, and brush and ink painting for the illustrated instruction manual. While these were digitally edited, they were ultimately risograph-printed on richly textured sugar paper, lending a handmade quality that was fitting for the project’s subject matter.
