Sold Down The River
Encapsulating the beauty of decay and using symbolism within designs to represent betrayal, this range of printed textiles is presented in a streetwear context. Featuring dark colours on fabrics made to withstand rough terrain, this body of work is inspired by the betrayal of governments towards small communities and the urban decay resulting from abandonment. Buildings that once housed small businesses sustaining lives are now left in ruin due to the inability to compete with major corporations. However, with abandonment and betrayal come new creative ideas.
Through a recontextualisation of these buildings, they are given new life. Drawing inspiration from graphic mark-making, this textile collection is born, textural prints are adorned with symbolism and typography relevant to the context. This is not a protest, but rather an illustration that even amidst betrayal and urban ruin, new ideas can be born.
