'Taking Shape with Fatima Homework Club” will be a workshop that brings together a focus group of children aged between 7 and 9 years and their youth leaders from the F2 Centre. The premise of this workshop is to celebrate the collaboration between socially-engaged artist, Emma Brennan, and Fatima Homework Club, over the course of this past year. Focussing specifically on literacy levels of children within marginalised communities, Emma’s integration of “pre-writing” shapes into a series of playful workshops, investigates the positive effects of creative processes on literacy comprehension. Through siting this workshop within the space of her final year degree exhibition, Emma draws together the different strands of her practice that encompasses social engagement, community based practice and expanded print. 1 workshop facilitator (This is myself - 20334003@student.ncad.ie) 12 workshop participants (children ages 7-9) - I am fully Garda Vetted and have been working with this group for the past 2 years within the context of Studio+ D8 Neighbourhood Residency, which continued during my final year project. 2 or 3 Fatima Homework Club Youth Leaders will supervise the children (Main contact youth worker: Shauna O’Brien) Equipment and technology takes the form of print materials provided by myself in consultation with print department staff to facilitate the workshop.
