Performance: 'Karbantartás' with Sculpture and Expanded Practice graduate Boglarka Zajzon.
The meaning of the Hungarian word 'karbantartás' directly translates to the English word, 'maintenance'. From the artist's perspective, we consider the compounding of 'kar', meaning 'arm', and 'tartás' meaning 'to hold' in totality understood as 'being held in the arms of..'. Therefore, in this context the artist posits 'maintenance' as not only referring to the preservation of functionality but to also indicate a form of nurturing and care.
Through the artmaking of 'Karbantartás', Zajzon explored the interplay of feminism, technology, and the performative essence of daily rituals. Metaphorically signalling aspects of new technology to symbolise women's liberation from traditional household burdens. Through performance, the artist explores the symbiotic relationship between technology and feminism, portraying a dance of mutual support and empowerment - reflecting on narratives of gender dynamics, confinement and the repetitive nature of everyday tasks as practices of mindfulness.
